At Galerie Mánes, Maxim Havlíček (b. 1974, Prague) presents his latest cycle, Anima Mundi—including a seven-metre canvas created specifically for this space—in which calligraphic gesture is transformed into an abstract record. Havlíček does not use writing as a vehicle for meaning, but as pure movement. For him, the canvas is not an image of an object, but rather the trace of an event. His gestures are larger than the gaze that is meant to encompass them. The eye does not settle on a single point in the painting, but follows the movement of the hand. In this way, the viewer’s fixed position—where they stand in relation to what they see—dissolves.
