The exhibition presents iconic and previously unexhibited works by this world-renowned artist. The exhibits come from prestigious collections from Czechia, Germany, Italy, and the USA. Let yourself be enchanted by moving pages and landscapes that come to life like in a magical film, and see details enlarged to fascinating dimensions.
Part of the exhibition will be conceived in a very spatial way, which is entirely in keeping with how the artist worked throughout his life.
VOJTĚCH KUBAŠTA
In the 1940s, he illustrated children’s books (Kouzelné obálky [Magical Covers], 1943, Doležal Publishing House in Červený Kostelec; Příběhy z medové stráně [Stories from the Honey Slope], 1943, Vyšehrad in Prague; U Toledské brány [At the Toledo Gate], 1944, Vyšehrad in Prague).
In the post-war period, his work shifted from graphic design for adult books to colored graphics with Prague motifs, three-dimensional paper nativity scenes, and, above all, he continued to work on children’s books. He not only illustrated them, but also created three-dimensional pop-up books based on his own designs, which were world-class at the time. Thanks to their export editions from Artia, he is still recognized today as one of the pioneers of three-dimensional children’s books.
Some were published in Czech (e.g., O červené Karkulce [Little Red Riding Hood], 1957), while others were not published in Czech until after 1989. Among Kubašta’s later illustrated books, the educational books by H. and E. Škodovi, Už vím proč I a II (I Already Know Why I and II, 1979, 1980) and Zákulisí velkoměsta (Behind the Scenes of the Big City, 1982), are particularly well known. A large collection of the artist’s books is held by the Bienes Museum of the Modern Book in the US. An exhibition of his works was held there in 2005, followed by an exhibition in Prague in 2006. An exhibition of Kubašta’s pop-up books and other works was held in Brno until June 29, 2014. It also included pop-up postcards. At Christmas 2023, an exhibition was held at the South Bohemian Museum in České Budějovice.
