In March 2025, the Mánes Gallery will host an exclusive retrospective exhibition entitled “Jiří Kovařík: Damned Genius,” which will present the fascinating life and work of one of the most controversial Czech painters of the 20th century. During his lifetime, Kovařík was neglected, misunderstood, and often rejected, yet his art represents a timeless vision that is finding new resonance today.
JIŘÍ KOVAŘÍK
Jiří Kovařík (1932–1994) was a painter and graphic artist whose work ranged between surrealism, symbolism, and modern expressionism. His work drew inspiration from mythology, dreamlike visions, and deep introspection into the human psyche. He was a representative of a nonconformist approach to art, which was considered too radical in his time. Today, Kovařík’s work is valued as an important part of Czech modern art. That is one of the reasons why you can visit it at Mánes.
